The Walter E. Brandon Sickle Cell 5K Walk/Run
Founded in 1998 in memory of co-founder, Walter E. Brandon, this event has served as a platform to raise awareness for Sickle Cell Disease. Reverend Brandon lived with Sickle Cell Disease, which was very influential in his lifetime work. Due to his dedication, love, and compassion for supporting adults and children living with the illness, the 5K Walk/Run was created in his honor. Sponsored by the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America / Philadelphia Delaware Valley Chapter (SCDAA/PDVC) and the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) District Council 33, the Walter E. Brandon Sickle Cell 5K Walk/Run will be held on Saturday, October 24th, 2015. Typically scheduled on the last Saturday of September, the change of date this year is due to the Pope visiting our beautiful city of Philadelphia for the World Family Meeting during the last week of September.
The Walter E. Brandon Sickle Cell 5K Walk/Run will feature a Bell Ringing Ceremony in remembrance of those who have passed away, a Wellness Pavilion, Health Screenings, Community Resources/Information, Entertainment, Refreshments, and an Award Ceremony for the top male/female runners in each age group. Proceeds from this event will support programming to assist the needs of individuals and families affected by Sickle Cell Disease. Participants may also purchase a memorial course marker in memory of or in honor of a loved one who lives with or has passed away from the complications of Sickle Cell Disease.
